Get the Most from Your Canvas Learning Experience

Using the Canvas Student app on iPads or other mobile devices is a convenient way to stay connected to your courses. It works well for viewing course content, checking grades, reading announcements, and keeping track of important dates and deadlines.

For the best experience when completing coursework, however, students are encouraged to use Canvas in a web browser. The browser version provides access to the full range of Canvas features and offers the most reliable experience for course participation and assignment completion.

Using the web version of Canvas helps ensure that students can:

  • View assignments and course content as intended
  • Upload files and submit coursework successfully
  • Access quizzes and exams with full functionality
  • Use third-party tools and learning resources integrated into Canvas
  • Watch embedded videos and multimedia content without interruption
  • Participate fully in discussion boards and collaborative activities
  • Open external websites and publisher content more reliably
  • Experience course pages and instructional materials with proper formatting

By completing coursework through a web browser, students can avoid technical challenges and focus their attention on learning, participation, and academic success. The Canvas Student app remains an excellent companion tool for staying informed and connected while on the go.

Use a Web Browser for the Best Experience

For the most reliable Canvas experience, students should access their courses through a web browser rather than the Canvas Student app.

Recommended Browsers

  1. Google Chrome (Preferred)
  2. Mozilla Firefox (Preferred)
  3. Safari (Supported)

Students should:

  1. Open Chrome or Firefox on their iPad.
  2. Navigate to the Canvas login page.
  3. Sign in and complete coursework directly through the browser.

Encouraging students to use a web browser from the beginning of the semester can help prevent many common technical issues.

Important Information About Online Proctored Exams

Students taking online proctored exams should be aware that iPads are not compatible with many online proctoring platforms.

While students may be able to schedule an exam using their iPad, they will not be able to complete a proctored exam on the device itself.

Students should plan to:

  • Test at an approved testing center, or
  • Use a Windows- or Mac-based computer for virtual proctored exams

Faculty are encouraged to communicate these requirements early in the semester so students can make appropriate arrangements well before their exam dates.

Access Restrictions on Managed Devices

Students using institution-managed or organization-managed devices (i.e. dual credit students using district issued devices) may encounter restrictions when attempting to access certain websites, publisher content, videos, or external learning tools.

Because access policies vary by organization and device configuration, some resources used in Canvas courses may be blocked or limited.

When students encounter these issues, they should first contact the high school technology support team responsible for managing their device or network. These are the individuals who have the ability to unblock restricted content. Students should also inform their instructor of such constraints, who can then inform the SJC IT department so we can assist as appropriate.

Communication Is Key

Many technology-related frustrations can be prevented through proactive communication. By encouraging students to use supported browsers, understand proctored exam requirements, and seek assistance when device restrictions affect course access, faculty can help create a smoother and more successful online learning experience.

As mobile device usage continues to grow, awareness of these best practices can help students stay engaged, complete coursework successfully, and make the most of their Canvas learning environment.

If additional device-related issues arise, faculty should continue reporting them through IT Tickets so trends can be identified and addressed proactively.
