Logging in for the first time

To access your account for the first time, you must log in to your SJC email account using your San Juan College email address and default password. This will allow you to set up your security questions and Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) methods. Be sure to reset your default password after your initial password setup.

What do you need to do?

Still Can't Log in? Call the SJC Help Desk at (505) 566-3266 for 24/7 support.

If you need to change your security questions, please call the Help Desk, or submit a Help Desk Ticket.

Account Information and Resources

  • You must set up your Multi-factor authentication before you can use your SJC account. Learn how with the MFA First Time Set-Up Guide (PDF)
  • Passwords expire every 90 days.
  • Passwords must be 8 characters long.
  • The 5 most recently used passwords for your SJC account cannot be used.

Default Student Information

Your student username will be:

your first initial + middle initial + last name + last two digits of your social security number

Your student email address will be:

username@my.sanjuancollege.edu.

Student Default Password:

sjcp + the last 4 digits of your student ID number.

Example:

Student Name: John A. Smith
Student SSN: 123-45-6789
Student ID Number: 0000123

This student's login information would be:

Username: jasmith89
Password: sjcp0123
Email: jasmith89@my.sanjuancollege.edu

Is your login still not working? Try these tips and tricks!

  1. Try your username without the middle initial.
    • If you did not provide a middle initial on your SJC application, your username may be your first initial + last name + last two digits of your social security number.

The example username above without the middle initial would look like jsmith89

  1. Try putting a '1' at the end of the username.
    • On occasion, multiple people have the same username. In that instance, the system adds a '1' to the end.

The example username above with the middle initial would look like jasmith891.

If these tips do not work for you, please contact the Help Desk at (505)566-3266.

Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

What is MFA?

Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is an additional layer of security added to the login process which relies on two forms of authentication: something you know, and something you own or have with you. The "something you know" is your San Juan College username and password. The "something you have with you" can be a mobile device, tablet, or landline phone. MFA ensures that if your password is hacked, your account will remain secure. You will be prompted to set up your MFA preferences the first time you log in.

Multifactor Authentication Setup Guide (PDF)

  1. San Juan College applications that use MFA, such as Canvas and Microsoft Office 365, will prompt you to use MFA.
  2. You will be prompted for MFA the first time you log in or when your password changes.
  3. You will need to re-authenticate each device and browser you use.
  4. If your IP address changes, you will need to re-authenticate. This could occur if your home internet service provider performs security updates, changing your IP address.
  5. You can change your authentication settings by visiting Microsoft's Security Verification page or going to the MFA Set Up Page.
  6. You will have 30 seconds to authenticate once you are given a code. If you miss that timeframe, you can request a new verification code.

Authentication methods allow a second level of security to your San Juan College account.

You will choose a primary authentication method when you register, which you can change at any time by going to MFA Set Up Page and logging in using your SJC username and password. If you are able, we highly suggest you use the Microsoft Mobile Push Notification verification method. International users should use the Microsoft Authenticator Application via their phones. Current options are outlined below:

Verification Method Description
Microsoft Mobile Push Notification (Microsoft Authenticator Application Required)  A push notification is sent to the authenticator app on your smartphone asking you to authenticate your login. (San Juan College ITC recommends this option).
Verification Code (Microsoft Authenticator Application Required) The Mobile Microsoft Authenticator app will generate a verification code that updates every 30 seconds. You will be asked to enter the most current verification code on the sign-in screen.
Text Messages A text message with a 6-digit code is sent to your cell phone that you will input to complete the authentication process.
Phone Calls  A call is placed to your phone asking you to verify you are signing in. Press the # key to complete the authentication process

You may also want to add a backup authentication method, like an additional cell phone number, to help you access your account in case you forget or lose your device. If you are unable to register or are unable to satisfy these requirements, please submit a Help Desk Ticket.

Multi-Factor Authentication FAQs

If you do not have a smartphone, you can also use your office phone or another landline phone number as your second authenticator. Please note that you will need to be able to answer the phone to receive the code. If you are unable to register or unable to satisfy the requirements please submit a Help Desk ticket..

If you forget your mobile device at home, you can use your backup authentication method – which may be a landline or an email address that is available on re-authentication. If you encounter any issues, please submit a Help Desk Ticket or call 505-566-3266.
